Do You Really Need a Dental Crown if a Tooth Isn’t Bothering You?

Posted .

“But doc, the tooth isn’t bothering me, do I really need a crown?”

This is a great question! While there are many reasons for a tooth to need a crown, the primary purpose is to strengthen a tooth with a new “hard outer shell.” Teeth that are good candidates for a crown have large cavities or large existing fillings and are starting to break down and crack (see photos 1,2, and 3).

Not many people think of a crown as a preventative option, but that’s what it really is in most cases, and the best time to take action is before cavities, bacteria and cracks propagate to the middle (nerve) of the tooth and cause pain. A tooth with chronic cracks can actually cause the tooth to break in half to the point where nothing can be done to save the tooth, leaving the only option of pulling it (see photo 4). Considering the option of a dental crown can help a tooth last a long time!
